United Nations Proteus Project

WellData provides technical support for the infrastructure of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) World Conservation Monitoring Centre (UNEP-WCMC) Proteus Project.

United Nations Proteus

Proteus is a ‘public-private’ partnership which started in late 2003 as an ambitious programme between the United Nations and a group of environmentally concerned private sector organizations. The objective is to give decision-makers in industry and elsewhere access to the best possible data and information on the location and distribution of biodiversity.

WellData’s role in the project is to:
  • To provide integrated access to the best available data on irreplaceable, unprotected biodiversity and prospective protected areas.
  • To increase access to up-to-date information on the distribution and status of coastal and marine ecosystems.
  • To support the development of an online resource on critical coastal and inshore marine ecosystems and pioneering of the use of ‘citizen science’ (using ‘Wiki-style’ web tools) for creating a continually up-to-date bank of information.
